Pole Mountain Recreation Sites and Roads Open for Season

(LARAMIE, Wyo.)  May 11, 2017

 

Campgrounds, day-use sites, and roads within the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest have all been opened for the season during the last week.

Tie City, Vedauwoo, and Yellow Pine campgrounds are all open for public use, as well as the Vedauwoo Day-Use Area. Campgrounds are first-come, first-serve, and some services, such as water at all three campgrounds, may be temporarily unavailable to begin the season.

Roads on the 55,000-acre section of National Forest between Laramie and Cheyenne had been temporarily closed for the last couple months, but are now fully open.

Annual Prescribed Burning to Begin on Pole Mountain

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - May 5, 2017

 

Laramie Ranger District fire crews hope to take advantage of favorable fuel and weather conditions next week in order to begin conducting prescribed burns in the northern portion of the Pole Mountain unit.

The burning will continue to take place as conditions allow over the next few weeks and/or months.

Smoke from the burns will likely be visible to the public from Happy Jack Highway (Wyo Highway 210) and nearby Forest Roads once they open for the season. The burn units are near Eagle Rock, just north of Forest Road 714.

Draft Pole Mountain Travel Management Decision is Announced

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - (April 19, 2017)

 (LARAMIE, Wyo.)  April 19, 2017 – Laramie District Ranger Frank Romero has issued a Draft Decision Notice (DN) and final Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Pole Mountain Travel Management Project.

The Draft DN contains multiple decision aspects.

  •          It will leave the majority of roads on Pole Mountain in their current, open status.
  •          Additionally, select unauthorized routes will be added to the system, parking areas will be added, connectors between existing roads will be added, and the Laramie Ranger District (LRD) will use seasonal closures and designated dispersed camping as management tools.
  •          In order to address access and resource concerns, other management actions include shortening roads, closing roads to public use, and decommissioning roads.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - (April 12, 2017)

Albany County EMA-  Wyoming has scheduled state wide tornado warning drill Wednesday morning, at 10:30 am.

At that time plan on hearing the warning on local TV, as well as the radio and outdoor warning sirens.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service tell us this is a good time to take a moment to consider what you would do if the warning was real.

They say, a basement or a room away from windows is the safest place to be.

Thunder Basin National Grassland Public Workshop Set for April 12 in Newcastle, Second Cooperative Working Group Meeting is April 13 

Public Service Announcement(DOUGLAS, Wyo.)  April 5, 2017

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will host two collaborative meetings next week in Newcastle, Wyo. The first will be a public learning workshop on Wed., April 12, from 1-4 p.m. at the Weston County Senior Center. Second will be a cooperative working group meeting on Thurs., April 13, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., also at the Weston County Senior Center.

Both events will primarily focus on prairie dog colony management on the Thunder Basin National Grassland (TBNG), and both will be facilitated by the University of Wyoming Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources. Both are open to the public, however, only government representatives may participate in the working group on Thursday, as is detailed below.

Annual Pole Mountain Shooting Restrictions Begin March 31

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - (March 30, 2017)

(LARAMIE, Wyo.)  March 30, 2017 – The Laramie Ranger District would like to remind the public that annual shooting restrictions on Pole Mountain will take effect on Friday, March 31.  These restrictions, which are authorized by Forest Service special order, prohibit the discharge of firearms within the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest from March 31 through Sept. 10.

Hunters who possess a valid Wyoming hunting license and are in pursuit of the species for which their license is valid are exempted.  This includes spring turkey hunters.

County test of the Emergency Outdoor Warning Siren System, IPAWS System and CodeRed

NEWS RELEASE - (March 27, 2017)

 

The Albany County Emergency Management Agency will be testing the Outdoor Warning Siren system, Code Red and IPAWS System promptly at 10:00 a.m. Friday April 7,2017 for all Albany County Sirens located in Laramie, Rock River, Centennial and Albany. The outdoor warning system will sound a steady signal for a period of 1 to 3 minutes.  The IPAWS test will only go out to the media that have elected to receive EAS Messages.  

The Albany County Outdoor Warning system auditory warns citizens that are outside of an emergency. When residents hear the sirens they should take cover immediately and tune into a local radio or television station to receive additional emergency information.  Residents should not call 911 or local emergency officials for information as this tie’s up telephone lines needed for emergency operations.  The sirens are an all-hazards emergency warning system and are intended to warn residents of any life threatening situation in the area.
