(LARAMIE, Wyo.) July 29, 2013 – Multiple temporary road closures will be going into effect soon on the Medicine Bow National Forest, some as early as this week. Visitors to the area and those using Forest roads for any reason should be aware of these closures and should plan accordingly.
Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests to go Out of Fire Restrictions
(LARAMIE, Wyo.) July 18, 2013 –In coordination with other federal, state and local agencies in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, Stage 1 fire restrictions will be rescinded on the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests at 12:01 a.m. on July 19, 2013.
While several factors are considered in fire restriction decisions, increased moisture in fine fuels such as grass and shrubs, plus favorable fire weather forecasts helped influence this decision.
On Thursday July 11, 2013 at approximately 1004 a.m. Deputies of the Albany County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a business on Fort Sanders Drive south of Laramie after receiving a report of a vehicle that was possibly rigged with explosives. Dispatch and investigating deputies were able to obtain a vehicle description and did in fact locate the vehicle in a vehicle storage area of a local area tow company, on Ft. Sanders Drive.
Due to details that were gathered early in the investigation, further assistance was requested of the University of Wyoming bomb detection K-9 team, Wyoming Highway patrol and the Rural Response Team #3 which is comprised of Bomb technicians from the Laramie Police Department as well as an Engine and ambulance with the Laramie Fire department.

(SARATOGA, Wyo.) July 2, 2013 – Hazard tree removal work will be conducted over the next couple of months on the French Creek Road (Forest Road 500) within the Brush Creek-Hayden (BCH) Ranger District. To avoid closing long stretches of this popular route, work will be completed in three segments, working from west to east.
The first closed segment is between the junctions with Forest Road 206 and Forest Road 225. This will be followed by a closure between the junctions with Forest Road 225 and Forest Road 210. Finally, the road will be closed between Forest Road 210 and 500.1J.
Fire Restrictions to go into Effect on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests
(LARAMIE, Wyo.) July 1, 2013
Stage 1 fire restrictions will go into effect on the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests at 12:01 a.m. on July 2, 2013. This decision, which was made in coordination with multiple agencies and counties, was prompted by a combination of factors that include rapidly drying vegetation, ongoing drought conditions, growing fire danger, and unfavorable fire weather forecasts.
“Despite improved snowpack and a relatively wet spring, conditions are quickly changing and forest vegetation that was recently green is now at increased risk of burning,” said Phil Cruz, Forest Supervisor for the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland (MBRTB). “Last year all but one of our four large fires was started by lightning; however, even one human-caused fire is too many and we hope to proactively reduce this risk by implementing restrictions that are now warranted.”

Smoke to be Highly Visible from Pile Burning on Pole Mountain
(LARAMIE, Wyo.) January 16, 2013 –Laramie Ranger District fire crews will be burning slash piles in several highly visible areas on Wednesday, January 30. The most noticeable smoke will likely be from piles along Interstate 80 east of Laramie and along Highway 230 west of the town of Woods Landing.
The piles to be burned within eyesight of Interstate 80 are at the U.S. Forest Service Work Center, which is just east of the Summit Visitor Center. Also slated for ignition on the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest include piles at Pole Creek Group Campground and along Forest Road 700N.
Pole Creek Group Campground is near Happy Jack and Tie City recreation areas, which are open during winter months.
Prior to implementation, weather conditions will be closely monitored and the decision to ignite piles will only occur after fire managers determine that conditions such as snow cover are within established burn plan parameters for safe, effective fires.
Residents, travelers and the recreating public should be aware that smoke from these burns is expected and will often be visible.
All of the slash piles that will be burned were created primarily by bark beetle mitigation efforts in Wildland Urban Interface areas. For more information contact the Laramie Ranger District at 307-745-2300, visit our website at http://fs.usda.gov/mbr or follow the MBRTB on Twitter, @MBRNFsTBNG.
