Hazard Mitigation Survey

Public Service AnnouncementAlbany County, along with the incorporated jurisdictions of Laramie and Rock River, are currently engaged in a planning process to update the local hazard mitigation plan. This plan is part of a federal requirement to identify risks and become less vulnerable to natural disasters. Your participation in this brief, 10 minute online survey is very important to ensure your voice is heard. We invite all residents to participate in the planning process by taking this on online survey.

This questionnaire provides an opportunity for you to share your opinions and participate in the mitigation planning process.  The information you provide will help us better understand your hazard concerns and can lead to mitigation activities that should help lessen the impact of future hazard events.  This survey is anonymous and open to the public. Should you have any questions, please contact Caroline Cunningham (Louis Berger), the planning consultant on the project. She can be reached at (919)-866-4413.

Lake Owen Campground Opened, Fire 100% Contained

(LARAMIE, Wyo.) July 16, 2014 The Owen Fire has been declared 100% contained and the nearby Lake Owen Campground and Day-Use Area have re-opened to the public.

Storm Peak Wildfire Module from Steamboat Springs, who had been managing the fire since Saturday, turned the incident back over to the Laramie Ranger District today. The District will continue patrolling the fire until it is fully controlled, completely out.

Recent rains were a major factor in full containment of the fire.  Although Forest Road 540, which accesses the campground and day-use area, has reopened, there are still a few remaining closures. The portion of the Rail Trail that runs through the west side of the fire is still closed to the public, as well as Forest Road 517.G and its’ spurs along the north edge of the fire. Several dispersed camping spots along Forest Road 540 are also closed.

Owen Fire Receives Precipitation, Area Closures Remain In Effect

(LARAMIE, Wyo.) July 11, 2014 The Owen Fire received widespread precipitation yesterday after firefighters made progress constructing containment line with the assistance of mechanical equipment. Containment remains at 80 percent and fire managers want to remind the public that the remaining 20 percent will be the most challenging and time consuming to complete.

“We hope to have the fire fully contained by around the end of the month.” said Laramie District Fire Management Officer Tom Gonnoud. “With the rugged terrain and hazard trees in the area, remaining containment will take more time to assure firefighter safety.”

The fire will downgrade to a Type 4 incident on Saturday, July 12 with fewer resources assigned; personnel from the Storm Peak Wildfire Module in Steamboat Springs will take command of the fire.
